I keep chickens

Postby pjohnston on Sat Dec 20, 2008 1:33 pm

Please can you tell me if I would be able to use a wormery to dispose of the chicken waste, i.e. pellets, straw, "used" bark etc. It seems a shame to put it all in the dustbin but my garden is at saturation point and we don't have green bins around here. I would subsequently want to use the compost on the vegetable patch - would this be safe?

Many thanks

Hi
I don't know if I can help, but, I would think that chicken waste might be too acidic for worms.
This forum is relatively new as the old Original Organics forum was closed due to certain things happening and has only just re-opened.
All I can suggest is try other forums. I visit one regularly just for the information. It's in the USA:
http://www.thegardenforums.org
You might try joining and asking on that one.
Cheers

Hi pjohnston,

Should be absolutely fine... just need to watch quantity and make sure you don't 'overload' the Wormery in a short space of time.

Fine for veg patch etc.. etc.. You don't get the risk of toxocara virus that you do to some extent with other animals' excrement.

Regards,
Liam
