Garden waste

Postby mattheywood on Mon Mar 30, 2009 8:29 pm

Can I put grass clippings and other green garden waste into a wormery, or would I risk overfeeding them?

Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,

Welcome to The Worm Forum, and thank you for your kind interest in our Wormeries.

We would not advise putting garden waste in the Wormery in quantity for a few reasons.

1) Grass cuttings particularly generate a lot of heat as they decompose. This excess heat can make it uncomfortable for the worms.

2) Putting garden waste into the Wormery can introduce flies (since it can have fly eggs etc... on it).

3) Risk of overfeeding.

The odd spent flower shouldn't do too much harm, but a Wormery shouldn't really be used to compost garden waste as a matter of course. A compost bin will do that job much better!

Regards,
Liam

Sorry ..... I disagree.

I have in stock over 8 metric tonnes of worm and over 25 tonnes of casting and sub compost. We use massive amounts of grass cuttings and other garden waste and our worms do very well. As long as the grass has been moistened and mixed with other material, we use farm waste, the worms will do just fine.

Regarding flies being transfered to the system, the increased heat will soon deal with them and the worms can easily tolerate higher temeratures than flies. Little - often- mix - check. You can't get wrong!
